Deciding Your Metal Type

The color will really vary depending on personal preference. White gold is currently a best-seller, but yellow gold is also making a comeback from its popularity in the 90s and early 2000s.

Rose gold, on the other hand, is fairly new to the engagement ring industry. This is a great color to choose if you want to really make a statement or if you tend to wear other gold or rose gold jewelry.

The metal type will likely be based on what your day-to-day activities involve. When comparing 14 and 18k gold, the main difference is in the durability and the percent of actual gold in the metal.

Since gold is actually a soft metal, the more gold in a ring, the less durable it will be. So in terms of hardness, 14k is actually a better choice.

However, if you’re concerned with the level of gold that’s in the ring, you’ll want to go with 18k.

If you have nickel allergies, you might already know that it can sometimes be found in lower karat gold. If that’s the case, you might want to go with 18k or platinum.

Of the three options, platinum is the most durable and a great option if you work with your hands or if you’re involved in fitness where a ring would come in contact with hard materials (cross-fit, weightlifting, rowing, etc.).
