The most asked question we get is how are lab grown diamonds made. To further understand the fact lab grown diamonds are as real as mined diamonds, first, know how they are created.
Lab Grown Diamonds Growth Methods
Lab diamonds can grow from High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Scientists began growing diamonds in the mid-1950s. As time progressed, so did the size of those lab created diamonds. In the 1990s, lab growers began manufacturing gem-quality diamonds enabling their use for both jewelry and industrial purposes.
Both processes require a small diamond seed. A diamond seed is a very small diamond the size of a human hair strand that has the necessary pure carbon-rich gas needed to grow synthetic diamonds.
High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)
An HPHT diamond is the traditional method for diamond growth. This method requires a diamond seed to undergo extremely high temperatures (1300-1600°C) and extremely high pressure (over 870,000 lbs) in a growth chamber.
In this chamber, the molten metal grows a synthetic diamond. Once the crystal has formed, a diamond cutter will cut the diamond in the desired fashion. This process closely replicates the way natural diamonds grow deep within the Earth.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
Like HPHT diamonds, CVD diamonds start from a diamond seed. Conversely, CVD entails multiple diamond seeds in a vacuum chamber filled with hydrogen and carbon-rich gases and heated to approximately 900-1200°C. Crystallization occurs over many weeks, and multiple crystals grow simultaneously. After forming, they are removed, cut, and polished.
Lab Diamonds Are Real Diamonds
All in all, it doesn’t matter if it’s a CVD diamond or an HPHT diamond, lab grown diamonds are as real as naturally occurring diamonds. The characteristics of a lab diamond endure the same quality scale and are undeniably identical to that of a natural diamond.
Mined Diamonds a.k.a. Natural Diamonds
Occasionally mined diamonds are commonly referred to as natural diamonds. While a lab grown diamond is not from the Earth’s surface, it is still real. The visual characteristics of a lab diamond versus a natural diamond are practically impossible to notice. However, the only difference between the two is their origins. Lab diamonds are guaranteed to be ethically sourced, and natural diamonds are not.
Grading Lab Grown Diamonds
Lab grown diamonds’ grades are based on the 4C’s created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), just as mined diamonds are. The four C’s include cut, color, clarity, and carat.
