Best Places to Propose in New York

New York City is one of the most uniquely romantic cities in the world. No wonder there are over 2,000 movies set in this global hub of culture! What sets this city apart from the rest of the world is its buzz of energy, hope, and life. These qualities earn it the nickname “The City That Never Sleeps.” While there are endless possibilities for your proposal in NYC, we have picked out a few of the memorable, timeless, and best places to propose.

Classic NYC Proposal Ideas

Central Park

One of the most quintessentially New York proposal spots is Central Park. Where you choose to propose is personal, but some of our favorite areas of the park are among the Bow Bridge, Belvedere Castle, and Conservatory Waters.

Bow Bridge rests over a reflective lake, with bountiful trees and views of Manhattan’s West Side. Propose on the Bridge during a sunset walk through the park!

Belvedere Castle offers a charming juxtaposition between urban architecture and medieval artifacts. It also provides a magical and romantic backdrop for a shared moment between lovers. Strolling along the parapets evokes images of knights and ladies in waiting, of a time when we declared our devotion by sonnet rather than cell phone.

Conservatory Water offers scenic accents that are both romantic and peaceful. Watch the miniature sailboat regattas coast by and surround yourself with original flora as you propose to your S/O by the water for a serene city escape.

Top of the Rock

Make a day out of your trip to Rockefeller Center. If you’re worried about giving away the surprise, there are many great dining options to choose from so you and your partner can enjoy a date. We recommend booking a table for dinner and drinks at Bar SixtyFive, Rock Center’s rooftop bar. Then, take your partner out to the terrace for a breath of fresh air at dusk and propose while taking in the incredible panoramic Manhattan skyline views.

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building offers a romantic, spectacular backdrop for popping the big question. As your loved one takes in the breathtaking 360-degree views of New York City from the 86th-floor observatory, get down on one knee and present the ring. The excitement and energy of the city spreads out below you, but at this moment, it feels like you are on top of the world.

Battery Park

For jaw-dropping views of Lady Liberty, consider popping the question at Battery Park. Stroll together through the park’s riverside promenade, the breeze from the harbor embracing you. Stop at the railing overlooking the water and get down on one knee, the iconic Statue of Liberty standing majestically in front of you across the bay as you propose.

Romantic Proposal with a Beautiful View

North River Lobster Co

Love being on the water? Love seafood? North River Lobster Company is the perfect way to escape the chaos of Manhattan for a mini getaway on the water. North River Lobster Company is New York City’s first and only floating lobster shack. Take your S/O and enjoy delicious lobster rolls, frosé, and refreshing cocktails amidst breathtaking views of New York City’s skyline.

They cruise up the Hudson throughout the day, so you can board anytime. We recommend hopping on and proposing to your S/O over a casual drink at sunset, then having your friends board after to celebrate on the boat!

Met Museum Rooftop

Even if you aren’t an art lover, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is truly a masterpiece by itself. Another New York City icon is the largest art museum in the United States. After appreciating the galleries together, head up to the Rooftop Garden (open early May through October). Here, you’ll find a charming outdoor gallery space with a bar and gorgeous views of Central Park and the city skyline. Spend time together gazing out at the city, and propose then!

East River

For a relaxed, romantic riverside proposal, head to the East River. Take a stroll hand-in-hand along the river’s pedestrian pathways, enjoying spectacular views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges lit up at night. Find a quiet spot away from the bustle of the city to stop and pop the question as boats glide by, with the glittering skyline as your backdrop.

Afterward, toast with a bottle of champagne at one of the nearby waterside cafes or go for a moonlit sail together to continue the enchantment. With the soothing sounds of the river and dazzling city views, the river waterfront provides a laidback yet magical setting to commit your lives to one another. Savor the tranquility of this spot in the city that never sleeps.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

For a marriage proposal with postcard-worthy views of the Brooklyn Bridge, head to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Stroll hand-in-hand along the riverfront park’s Pier 1, admiring Manhattan’s epic skyline shimmering across the water. Find a quiet grassy spot away from the crowds and get down on one knee, with the historic bridge framing your partner against the cityscape as you pop the question.

Out and About Proposals

The High Line

If you haven’t been to the High Line yet, it is absolutely one of New York City’s must-do’s. One of the more modern public spaces in the city, the revamped railroad is now an elevated linear greenway perfectly integrated into its surroundings, marrying views of towering skyscrapers, the Hudson River, and eventually you and your S.O.

The park has art installations up and down the West Side, so you can experience art, design, and nature all at once. In the summer, they have community stargazing too! After picking your favorite proposal spot there, head South for a celebratory dinner or drink at Untitled or Chelsea Market.

Ice Rink

Maybe you’ve never ice skated in your life, or maybe you can glide and spin in your sleep — either way, a romantic night on one of New York City’s most beautiful outdoor ice rinks will never disappoint. There are many great options for your winter proposal-on-ice, like Wollman Rink in Central Park, but Bryant Park’s festive Winter Village takes the prize.

Wander around the village, sampling amazing desserts, food, and hot drinks while taking in the holiday cheer. Then, strap on your skates and either propose on the ice or after you’ve finished. Maybe even fake a clumsy fall and propose as your S/O tries to help you up.

Restaurant Proposals

Tavern on the Green

Reserve a table at Tavern on the Green in the heart of bucolic Central Park for a romantic dinner and classic NYC restaurant proposal. The menu centers around hearty and seasonal ingredients and invites you into a sophisticated yet warm space in which to enjoy a moment with your future spouse. Tavern on the Green truly captures the spirit of Central Park and the energy of New York City, an amazing place for your proposal.

Your time there will be so memorable that you’ll want to host your wedding there a few months later!

PDT

As in “Please Don’t Tell,” PDT was formerly one of New York City’s best-kept secrets. This hidden speakeasy has become world-famous due to its incredibly crafted cocktails and hot-dog mystique.

You walk into Crif Dogs, an unassuming but adorable hot dog joint in the East Village. Much to your partner’s surprise, you will then step into the phone booth in the back of the room, dial 1 on the rotary phone, and be transported to a sexy and mysterious hideaway.

You can have an intimate and mood-lit night with your partner, sipping on inventive takes on Old Fashioneds and Sazeracs alongside comfort food like hot dogs and waffle fries.

Find a Pro to Capture the Moment

While it’s tempting to try capturing your proposal moment yourself on a phone camera, this approach has a lot of risks in a busy setting like New York City.

Propping up your device somewhere could draw unwanted attention, or it may get bumped over or stolen.

The city hustle and bustle means you can’t guarantee a clear, unobstructed shot on an unsupported phone. And if something goes wrong with your selfie setup, you miss documenting the magical moment forever. With my own experience bumping through crowds, this is not the best option!

Instead, consider hiring a private proposal photographer to capture the occasion. An experienced professional will know how to be discreet, setting up covertly in advance and blending into the scene unseen until just the right time.

They can scout the perfect hidden vantage points for the best angles and backdrops at your chosen location.

A professional-grade camera with a powerful zoom lens will ensure clear, high-quality images even from a distance away. And you can relax knowing you have an expert specially dedicated to flawlessly photographing your once-in-a-lifetime moment as it unfolds.

Don’t leave things to chance – book a proposal photographer to memorialize the scene stunningly and stress-free.
