CreditDonkey just did a survey of 1,000 people to find out their thoughts on engagement rings. The results are surprising … at least to those who aren’t on top of the lab-grown trend.

The Results

• More than 1 in 3 respondents (36 percent women and 38 percent men) think the engagement ring should cost less than $1,000.
• 26 percent of respondents think the ring should cost at least $1,000.
• 17.3 percent of respondents think it should cost at least $3,000.

Almost half of those surveyed (45 percent) said it didn’t matter whether a diamond was lab-grown or mined. Younger people were more receptive to the idea with 59 percent of 18-24 year-olds saying they are fine with lab-grown, 49 percent of 25-34 year-olds, 45 percent of 35-44 year-olds and 37 percent of those 55-64.

Does size matter? According to this survey, it’s not how big it is, but high-quality reigns supreme. 81.4 percent of those who responded said quality trumps size. More women (86 percent) than men (80 percent) share this opinion.

Women (61 percent) consider this to be the case more than men (43 percent). 72 percent of those surveyed would prefer to spend on a potential Honeymoon instead. As expected, a demographic of younger consumers (18-34) help boost this opinion.

And lastly, 67 percent of those who responded said that an engagement ring should come as a surprise, albeit one not completely out of the blue. Millennials are more keen on this opinion with 76.5 percent of those saying that “Will you marry me?” should involve a little theatrics. One-third believe that it shouldn’t be suspenseful.
